Course Description

All managers from time to time need to take a look at how effectively they are managing and leading their teams. This hands-on, very practical seminar will encourage managers to enhance some of their current skills, behaviors and practices. The program covers the key skills and approaches needed to excel in the workplace of the 21st century. Discussions, exercises, and self-assessments will cover such areas as delegating for development, communicating to enhance quality and productivity, dealing with challenging team members and coaching them through their difficulties, and resolving conflicts.

Learning Objectives

As a result of successful completion of this one-day workshop participants are expected to:

• Learn what their delegation style is and to make adjustments to it to meet the needs of their staff.
• Realize the importance of constantly communicating and giving and receiving feedback.
• Determine and the performance and behavior issues of their team members influence productivity and profitability.
• Use a six step method for coaching team members.
• Learn the five different methods for resolving conflict.
• Reflect on their current management style and what specific enhancements they need to make.

Facilitator

Gary S. Topchik is the managing partner of SilverStar Enterprises, a consulting firm specializing in management and leadership development, organizational change, and team building retreats. Gary has worked with a wide variety of organizations including Dolby Laboratories, Sony Pictures, Harman Becker, Oracle, Western Digital, American Airlines, Aramco, Batelco, AT&T, Honeywell, Apple Computer, and Disney, as well as many smaller organizations, educational institutions and governmental organizations.

He has articles published in the leading professional journals and has written five books: The First-Time Manager; Equity Checking: Managing Assumptions to Achieve Organizational Success; The Accidental Manager; Managing Workplace Negativity; and The First-Time Manager’s Guide to Team Building. He has appeared on many radio and cable shows discussing his work. Gary has an MBA in Organizational Behavior and advanced certification from Cornell University and is a Registered Organizational Development Coaching Consultant.
