How to Lean into Your Discomfort
Course Description
Many of us find ourselves in situations where we need to have a difficult conversation with someone, and rather than have the conversation, we avoid it. Somehow, avoiding the conversation seems to be better than what we imagine it will be like to have the conversation.
This Difficult Conversations workshop is designed to help participants understand why they avoid difficult conversations and then to learn strategies to hold a productive conversation to gain a desired outcome. Group activities, discussion, self-reflection and role playing combine to make a very interactive workshop with an emphasis on skill building. Participants will leave with an action plan to use specific tools and techniques to handle difficult conversations successfully.
Learning Objectives
As a result of successful completion of this one-day workshop participants are expected to:
- Recognize when they are avoiding a difficult conversation
- Pay attention to the dynamics of difficult conversations.
- Effectively prepare for difficult conversations using key tools.
- Pay attention to their mindset, rehearsal, and the setting for a difficult conversation.
- Hold effective difficult conversations.

Facilitator
Susan Gerke has been in business since 1998 following 21 years working for IBM where she was a manager as well as a technical support representative and a management development professional. Susan's focus since 1989 has been in designing, customizing and implementing leadership and teamwork programs meeting the needs of executives, managers, and employees in a wide number of companies and industries. A recognized expert on remote leadership and teaming, Susan is the co-author of The I in Team …Accelerating Performance of Remote and Co-Located Teams and Quick Guide to Interaction Styles and Working Remotely. She is also the co-author of Quick Guide to Interaction Styles and Time Dynamics.
Susan has a B.S. degree in Statistics from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She is a graduate of University Associates Human Resources and Organizational Development Intern program.
